Have you ever felt pain shooting from your lower back into your buttock or down your leg?
Maybe it's a dull ache, a burning sensation, or tingling that comes and goes.
Sometimes it happens after sitting too long, bending over, or even just getting out of bed.
You may have heard someone call it sciatica. But what does that actually mean, and why does the pain travel down your leg?
The answer isn't always as simple as a pinched nerve.
Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body. It's formed by nerves that come from your lower spine and travels through your buttock and down your leg.
When a nerve in your lower back becomes irritated or compressed, you may feel pain, tingling, numbness, or even weakness traveling into your leg.
But, not every pain that travels down your leg is sciatica.
Sometimes, muscles or joints in your lower back and hips can cause pain that spreads into your buttock or thigh, even when the sciatic nerve isn't directly involved.
That's why understanding where your symptoms are coming from matters. Different causes may require different approaches to care.
Have you noticed that sitting makes your leg pain worse, but standing or walking seems to help? Or maybe certain movements trigger a sharp, shooting sensation.
That's because your nerves help your brain and body communicate, influencing how you move and experience sensations.
When a nerve becomes irritated, certain positions or movements can make symptoms worse, while others may provide relief.
At Neuro Serenity Wellness, my approach to sciatica care assess how your spine moves, how your muscles are functioning, and whether your nervous system may be contributing to your symptoms.
Depending on your needs, care may include chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, hands-on muscle work, and targeted exercises to support more comfortable movement.
We work with what your whole body specifically needs.
Whether it's sitting through a workday, enjoying a long walk, or getting a good night's sleep, back and leg pain can make everyday activities frustrating.
My goal is to help you understand what's contributing to your symptoms and work toward lasting relief.
At Neuro Serenity Wellness in San Francisco's Castro District, I take a personalized approach that considers both your muscles, joints, and nervous system.
