Chiropractic care is about more than cracking your back. Discover how adjustments can improve joint movement, influence your nervous system, and help your body feel less tense and more at ease. Learn why my approach at Neuro Serenity Wellness looks beyond just the spine.
If you've never been to a chiropractor, you might have a few questions. Is it safe? Will it hurt? And what's actually happening when someone adjusts your spine?
Maybe you've watched videos of chiropractic adjustments on social media and wondered, "Is that really what chiropractors do?"
And I can understand why. Some of the so called techniques you see online aren't necessarily what we were taught in chiropractic school, and those dramatic videos can make chiropractic care look very unsafe and a little intimidating. I will rant about that in a different article..
But there's a lot more to chiropractic care than what you see on social media.
With nearly 20 years of experience helping people manage pain, including 11 years as a chiropractor, one of the things I enjoy most is helping patients understand what's happening in their bodies and how chiropractic care goes beyond just joints and muscles.
To me it is quite fascinating how much an adjustment affects the brain.
It's also about understanding the connection between your spine, your brain, and your nervous system. I love the neurology!
Think of your body and brain as being in a constant conversation. When pain or tension sets in, that dialogue starts to scramble, turning into a sort of "neurological noise."
When that happens, the message gets distorted. That's why I look far beyond just the local spot where you're feeling discomfort, because to change the conversation we have to listen to the whole system.
Have you ever noticed how your shoulders tighten when you're stressed? Or how difficult it can be to relax when your body feels stressed? It's not like you are consciously tightening up. It just happens.
Your nervous system plays a role in both of those experiences.
Your autonomic nervous system has two important branches. The sympathetic nervous system helps your body respond to challenges, while the parasympathetic nervous system supports rest, digestion, and recovery.
Both are essential, and your body naturally shifts between them throughout the day.
When you're dealing with ongoing pain or tension, you may find yourself feeling guarded, or have a low threshold for whatever life throws at you.
You may even find it hard to focus, or not sleep as well. An adjustment can help flip all this.
This is where I like to think beyond the mechanical side of chiropractic care.
An adjustment stimulates sensory receptors in your joints and surrounding tissues, which may influence how your nervous system processes movement, discomfort and your environment.
Some patients describe feeling lighter, more grounded and relaxed, or less tense after they get adjusted.
I sometimes think of that experience as a "neurologic reset", all the new sensory input sent to the brain allows for a change in patterns and gives the nervous system the opportunity to step into a more eased state.
Although researchers are still exploring how spinal manipulation affects autonomic nervous system activity, supporting a greater sense of ease is an important part of my approach.
A chiropractic adjustment uses a controlled movement or force applied to a joint. While it can help improve joint mobility and relax the muscles, it also provides sensory input to your nervous system. Your opportunity to reset.
And that familiar popping sound?
It's generally caused by gas-related changes inside the joint. It doesn't mean your bones are cracking or being pushed back into place.
The goal isn't the popping sound. It's helping your body move more comfortably and less tension on the nervous system.
That's an important question, and one you should always feel comfortable asking.
I have adjusted 92 year old's with osteoporosis and I have adjusted toddlers.
Chiropractic care can be an appropriate option, but like any healthcare treatment, it has potential risks and isn't right for everyone depending on history.
That's why your health history, a thorough evaluation is important.
There are many techniques and my approach is always tailored to what the patients nervous system and body needs.
My priority is helping you feel informed, comfortable, and involved in decisions about your care.
I take a personalized approach that considers both your musculoskeletal and neurological function.
Sometimes care involves chiropractic adjustments. Other times, we may focus on hands-on muscle work, targeted exercises, or strategies to help you move with less tension.
The goal to help you feel more comfortable, more grounded and at ease in your body.
If you're curious about chiropractic care and whether it might be right for you, I'd love to help you explore your options.
